BRUCE DAVIDSON: CENTRAL PARK IN PLATINUM

The platinum prints included in Bruce Davidson: Central Park in Platinum come from Davidson’s four-year exploration of the park, which began in 1991.

The platinum prints were hand printed on Arches Platine White by Stan Klimek. Each print is numbered and signed by Bruce Davidson on the front. All of these prints are one of a kind, except Young Boys at the Lake, which is an edition of 50. The remaining nine are the only free-standing platinum prints made of each subject. Bruce Davidson’s original negatives were used for all of the prints.

Platinum is known as a precious metal. It’s a noble metal in that it is beautiful, helpful and catalytic. When used in making a platinum print, it allows for a greater tonal range and subtlety in the final print. The craftsmanship of this project is beyond what I could ever achieve using silver gelatin,” said the photographer, Bruce Davidson, upon viewing the first completed commerce edition. “It is as if the Central Park imagery has been reborn and a new vision of the imagery holds true. The Platinum portfolio has brought me closer to my original vision and closer to the nature of the Park.

Bruce Davidson was born in Oak Park, Illinois in 1933. He attended the Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University. When he completed military service in 1957 he worked as a photographer for Life Magazine and in 1958, became a member of Magnum Agency. He has had one-man exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian Museum of American Art, The Walker Art Center, The International Center of Photography, The Museum of Photographic Arts in San Diego, The Aperture Foundation, and The Foundacion Cartier-Bresson in Paris. He has received numerous grants and awards including two grants from the National Endowment of the Arts, a Guggenheim Fellowship, The Lucie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Documentary Photography in 2004 and the Gold Medal Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Arts Club in 2007. His photographs have appeared in numerous publications and his prints have been acquired by many major museums worldwide. He has also directed three films.

Davidson continues to lecture, conduct workshops and produce astounding images.
